China Smoke Scene
The China Smoke scene derives from four main photographs. Recently I have been watching the sunrises across the East Bay near my home in San Francisco. As I look out over the Bay and ship yards numerous smoke stacks are always puffing away. From this view I came up with the idea of people making and gathering smoke and fire. I'd been working with my photographs from China and began composing this scene.
The woman in the foreground is making smoke and the other villagers in the background are collecting the smoke and fire.
Because of my interest in Chinese ritual papers which are almost always burned, I thought it most appropriate for these villagers to be performing these acts.
